Melrose Youth Softball Leagues are assigned by Grade

The Spring Softball leagues are:

  • Tee Ball (Pre-K and K)
  • Minors (grades 1-2)
  • Majors (grades 3-4)
  • Juniors (grades 5-6)
  • Seniors (grades 7-8)

T-ball: Pre-K and Kindergarten

  • Spring season:  This is a great way for young players to get exercise, have fun with teammates, and begin to learn softball basics. The league is for players in pre-K and in kindergarten. 
     
  • Teams:  Teams are grouped by school so that friends can play together.
     
  • Season:  There is one combined practice and game on Sundays (usually late morning or early afternoon) 
Melrose MA T-ball League

Minors (Grades 1-2)

  • Spring season: The Minors division is players in 1st and 2nd grade and provides a transition from t-ball to games that enforce all Melrose softball rules.  This division uses all Coach Pitch and there is no base stealing. 

  • Teams:  We try to assign players from the same school to the same team.  Depending on the numbers, the players from a school may be split across multiple teams but we do our best to keep friends together.

  • Season (April - mid June):  The teams usually play or practice once per week and once on Saturday.  

Majors (Grades 3-4)

  • Spring season:  The Majors division includes players in 3rd and 4th grade.  This division starts with Coach Pitch but we quickly transition to Kid Pitch.  The games are umpired by Coaches or by High School aged Junior umpires.

  • Teams:  We try to assign players from the same school to the same team.  Depending on the numbers, the players from a school may be split across multiple teams but we do our best to keep friends together

  • Season (April - mid June):  There is usually one game or practice during the week and one game on Saturday.  

  • Summer and Fall seasons: Depending on the interest from players and Coaches, MYS will field teams season to play other Middle Essex Softball League teams in the Summer and Fall League. Summer & Fall league teams are fielded by age, not by grade, due to USA Softball rules.  There may be tryouts for these teams. Summer League games are only played on weekdays. The Fall league has abbreviated double-headers on Saturdays. 

Juniors (Grades 5-6)

  • Spring season:  The Juniors division includes players in 5th and 6th grade.  This division uses all Kid pitchers.  Players are able to steal 2nd base.  The games are umpired either by Middle Essex Umpires or by High School aged Umpires.

  • Teams: Teams are created via a draft to ensure team parity throughout the league.

  • Season (April - mid June):  There are typically play twice per week and once on Saturday.  

  • Summer and fall seasons:  Depending on the interest from players and Coaches, MYS will field teams season to play other Middle Essex Softball League teams in the Summer and Fall League.
